National Youth MUN
Services: Organization Website
The National Youth Model United Nations (NYMUN) is a two-day conference that functions as a national simulation of the United Nations and its affiliated organizations, for youth aged 16-30.
The Problem
An organization like NYMUN needs to constantly update blogs, events and news to the website. But their old website which was built purely on HTML5 gave the authors hard time. They must have basic html knowledge edit and or update anything new. If they remove a tag or quote by mistake, the whole website would go south. Addition to that, the website had to support multi languages; English, Sinhala and Tamil. Doing this all without a content management system would be a nightmare.
Solution & Strategy
The client already had a hosting in Amazon Web Services. We deployed WordPress in an EC2 instance on Linux. They had an upcoming conference that was due just in few weeks and they were accepting registrations for the event. Keeping the website hidden for this situation is out of question. So, we created a Home Page with some buttons to register for the conference and worked in the back end. This time with no under construction splash page. Since NYMUN asked us the website to be created in 3 languages, the WordPress plugin Polylang is something you should checkout for this task. We would create a page in English first and the plugin would do the rest for the translated contents.
UI & UX
NYMUN’s main theme color is Pure Blue (or mostly pure) #0070DB and Very Dark Desaturated Blue #232f36 which we used for the typefaces in the headings. We gave an accent of Strong Cyan #009CCF. The buttons were given a gradient effect with linear gradient with 135 degree for normal state and 315 degree for hover state. The cool colors with a combination of white and light grey gives an aesthetically pleasing look for the website with no eye strain for the visitors who would spend time on the blogs.
Aftermath
Using WordPress to manage contents, news and event for the authors was made easy since they didn’t have to edit directly the code that would require HTML knowledge. Anyone with some basic guidance on how to use WordPress would be able to edit and manage the contents. The user role feature in the CMS gives limited permission to Authors, and Editors would be able to review on the contents that would be displayed.
